Thursday, August 27 – What To Know For This Year’s Tournment

THE DRAW

From Madison Keys to Sloane Stephens to sister Venus, Serena Williams has nearly every American competitor in her bracket. Still this is Serena’s year and look for her to be the first woman since Steffi Graff (1988) to win the Golden Slam, that is, all four Grand Slam tournies in a calendar year.

Over on the men’s side, Andy Murray faces lots of grinding competition in his bracket; Roger Federer should easily make the semi-finals, and Novak Djokovic seems poised to retain his No. 1-seeded status. The fun happens on the Kei Nishikori side of the sheet  – where the semi-final slot is anyone’s guess and definitely up for grabs.

Still, this is tennis – and with the quality of talent this year along with the taxing summer heat — anyone can walk off with the trophy in any division.

HOW TO WATCH

In the U.S., the matches will be covered by ESPN and its affiliates. If you live outside the U.S., please check your local listings.

usopensign

HOW TO WATCH IN PERSON

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

construct

Once at the tennis center, it will be quite evident that construction is name of the game as the USTA is  getting ready to put a new retractable roof on the main stadium next year. Already, as you can see, the metal framing is in place.

Also, there are some new roadways by the southern section of the grounds, where a new Grandstand stadium is being built.

None of this should take away from fan enjoyment or competitor play.

TRIVIA

* It’s the 100th anniversary of club tennis in Queens, the 40th anniversary of US Open night games, and the 10th anniversary of the Open’s blue court surface.

* Star chefs — including Masaharu Morimoto, Michael White, Ed Brown, Tony Mantuano, and Richard Sandoval — have come together once again to ensure that fans have some top eats at the Open.

According to the USTA, the US Open will serve approximately:

  • 15,000 pounds of beef tenderloin and steaks
  • 7.5 tons of crab, shrimp and lobster
  • 400,000 individual berries
  • 225,000 hamburgers and hot dogs
  • 85,000 pounds of poultry
  • 12.5 tons of lettuce
  • 66,000 bananas
  • 35,000 pounds of tomatoes; and
  • 7,000 specialty tennis ball cookies

steak

* One of the best alcoholic drinks you’ll have all year is the US Open’s signature cocktail, the GREY GOOSE® Honey Deuce. It’s made with vodka, lemonade, a splash of raspberry liqueur, and, for kicks, garnished with small honeydew “tennis” balls. You can also make it at home. We skip the melon balls and also add some club soda for some extra fizz.

* Best tennis-related shirt we’ve seen so far? A yellow Adidas shirt that read “All day I dream about sets.” Nice.
