The US Open began under sunny, hot skies. And matches were filled with sizzling excitement from the get-go.

The first upset: unseeded Kyle Edmond (GBR) dropped 13-seed Richard Gasquet (FRA) in three straight sets. Later, unseeded Shelby Rogers (USA) waved off 27-seed Sara Errani (ITA).

Other big winners today were 1-seed Novak Djokovic (SRB), 2-seed Angelique Kerber (GER, pictured above);  3-seed Garbine Muguruza;  4-seed Rafael Nadal (ESP);  5-seed Milos Raonic; 7-seed Roberta Vinci (ITA); and 7-seed Marin Cilic (CRO).
