US Open Diary – Day 8 Highlights – Labor Day – 2016

QUEENS, NY, September 5, 2016  –

There was a relaxed mood throughout the city as the Labor Day weekend — the unofficial end to summer in America – came to a close.

And with Tropical Storm Hermine not showing her wrathful side, it turned out to be an easy, breezy day for fans at the Open.

For players, well, that was another story.

8-seed Dominic Thiem (AUT) withdrew in the second set of his Round 16 match with a knee injury. His opponent wildcard Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) now plays 3-seed Stan Wawrinka, who also won his match today.

6-seed Venus WIlliams (USA) is also out of the tournament, losing in a third-set tiebreaker to 10-seed Karolina Pliskova (CZE, above).

Pliskova squares off next against unseeded Ana Konjuh, the Croatian player who routed 4-seed Agnieszka Radwanska (POL).

Serena Williams is also moving on to the quartefinals. The 1-seed defeated Yaroslava Shvedova in two straight sets – and will now face 5-seed Simona Halep (ROU) in an Elite Eight match-up.

Halep bested 11-seed Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) earlier in the day.

Also winning today were 2-seed Andy Murray (GBR) and 6-seed Kei Nishikori (JPN).

Murray and Nishikori meet next.
