In what had to have been the most entertaining match of the day – if not the entire tournament –Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) [24] crawled back from two sets down to challenge Dominic Thiem (AUS) [6] for the rest of the match.

It was an incredible comeback for del Potro, who won the crowd, the next three sets, and the right to play Roger Federer (SUI) [3] in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Karolina Pliskova (CZE) [1] had an easier day than del Potro, sending off Jennifer Brady (USA) with the score of 6-1, 6-0. Pliskova will go on to face Madison Keys (USA) [15] in an Elite Eight match-up

Another sunny day, another sell-out crowd, and lots of Round Two tennis, especially for players Shelby Rogers (USA) and Daria Gavrilova (AUS) [25], who  faced-off in the longest Women’s Single’s match ever at the US Open. The match — which lasted three hours and 33 minutes — went in Roger’s favor, with the American winning 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.

Also on time’s side was Roger Federer. The 36-year-old 3-seed nearly didn’t escape his match against Mikhail Youzhny, of Russia. Youzhny had Federer up against the ropes, up two sets to one, but Youzhny appeared to injure his hip and Federer held firm, winning his second straight five -set match, 6-1, 6-7, 4-6, 6-4, 5-2.

About his two long matches, Federer joked: “I feel quite warmed-up by now.”

borna coric us open 2017

Tennis fans soaked up the sun and lots of good tennis after most of Tuesday’s matches were rained out.

And while there were a few major losses over the past two days — including Simona Halep, Johanna Konta and Angelique Kerber — many of the seeded stars took to sun-splashed courts and cruised to victory during their early matches.

There were several notable losses, however, including Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) [5]; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) [8]; Nick Kyrgios (AUS) [14]; Kristina Mladenovic [14]; Fabio Fognini (ITA) [22]; and Richard Gasquet (FRA) [26].

Most surprising, though, was 4-seed Alexander Zverev falling in four sets to Croatia’s Borna Coric (pictured above). Zverev had been tapped to go far in the tournament — with some even thinking he could win the whole Open. But the six-foot-six German just couldn’t pull off two tiebreakers against a determined Coric, who’s been dubbed “The Young Djokovic.” The final score: 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.

Up next for Coric? 28-seed Kevin Anderson, of South Africa.

A little lift isn’t enough for Kayla Day who lost a close match to fellow American Shelby Rogers, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Wet weather canceled many day-time matches, but Arthur Ashe’s roof permitted the action to continue on the main court.

1-seed Karolina Pliskova (CZE) easily advanced in two sets. But the next match was a sure-fire stunner as Angelique Kerber — last year’s US Open champ — was bested by Japan’s 19-year-old Naomi Osaka, of Japan. The final score: 3-6, 1-6.

Said Kerber, of her first-round loss: “It was not my day, completely not my day today.”

It was nearly a dream day for another 19-year-old, Frances Tiafoe, of America. The young phenom nearly beat 3-seed Roger Federer in five sets, but eventually lost the close match by the score of 6-4, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6.

The biggest surprise of the day? For us, it was the first-round, first-day defeat of UK’s Johanna Konta, the Open’s 7-seed who was a semi-finalist at this year’s Wimbledon.

Konta lost in three sets to unseeded Aleksandra Krunic, of Serbia. The score – 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

Konta was expected to go far this year – and is another shock for British fans who learned over the weekend that Andy Murray was withdrawing from the competition due to injury.

Another intriguing match-up pitted Maria Sharapova versus 2-seed Simona Halep. Sharapova, a wild card entry, outlasted Halep in three sets, dashing Halep’s dream of turning around her rather disappointing season.
