A Fashionable Q&A with… Jewelry Designer Amrita Singh

In NewsWhistle’s weekly question-and-answer series, Clara Morgan speaks with some of the world’s top influencers and finds out more about their lives and careers.

This week, Clara speaks with fashion jewelry designer Amrita Singh who creates one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by her travels and her New York: urban, culturally diverse, and infused with artistic inspiration. Her designer jewelry fuses Old World aesthetics with New World fashion, resulting in truly unique, wearable works of art.

Trained by the best in the field, Amrita graduated from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and also completed the prestigious two-year executive training program at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City. She has worked with world-renowned designers such as Oscar de la Renta and Christian Lacroix. Her achievements were also recognized by her fellow designers when Amrita was nominated by FGI (Fashion Group International) for the Rising Star Award in the Fine Jewelry Category in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Amrita is also an avid traveler, which is reflected in her intricate Indian-inspired designs. Amrita draws upon the designs of India and the Mughal dynasty to create breathtaking jewelry and accessories. In addition to jewelry, Amrita’s lifestyle brand includes scarves, specially-designed bangle towers, jewelry and cosmetics cases, iconic handbags, and a wide range of home decor.

1. You are a well-known jewelry designer; what led you to branch out into handbags?

I love making jewelry, but my vision for Amrita Singh is to be a global lifestyle brand. Handbags just seemed like the natural extension to jewelry.

2. What was your favorite jewelry piece to design out of all the ones you have done? Why?

My favorite piece is the Crescent Moon pendant, I wear it all the time and it is a conversation piece. It stands out for its workmanship and vintage appeal.

3. What are the latest jewelry trends to look out for in the fall?

Tassels are the BIG trend for 2016 – tassels in necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. The longer the better! Tassels are not understated by any means.

4. If you could meet anyone in the world, who do you want to meet? And why?

If she was alive, I would have loved to meet Mother Teresa. To be in the presence of someone who is a real saint would be a surreal experience.

5. Where do you get your style inspiration from?

I get inspiration from the streets of New York! I love the vibe of SoHo and the eclectic style of women in New York. It is truly a global melting pot.

6. How would you define your style? Can you give an example of what you would wear on a night out?

My style is boho chic in general. But for night time, I prefer a more polished look in high heels and a trendy cocktail dress.

7. Can you tell us about the worst fashion mistake you ever made?

Shoulder pads!!! Although they didn’t seem like such a faux pas in 1984. Thank god the 80’s are over.

8. Which three items must you always have in your purse?

I always have lip gloss, eyeliner, and a granola bar. The makeup for obvious reasons…but a granola bar is an essential when you are on the run. I hate eating junk food just because I don’t have time, which is often.

9. Best international dining experience you’ve ever had?

I always end up going to my favorite restaurant, Bukhara, when I visit New Delhi, India. It’s the finest in north Indian cuisine. The restaurant does not take reservations and is always full, but worth the wait every time. The food is always consistent and their signature dish Daal Bukhara (black lentils) is out of this world.

10. What was the best vacation you ever had?

My best vacation was in the south of France. I have been there many times but it had a special meaning when I went with my husband Sam for our honeymoon. We stayed at a few different hotels but the best one was la Voile d’or in Nice. It had an old world charm and the views were spectacular. In two weeks, we did not have one bad meal – that is what made it just perfect.

11. What song can you listen to on repeat?

I love “Diamonds in the Sky” by Rihanna. I am a huge Rihanna fan and find inspiration in her music.

12. What advice do you have for others entering your profession? What are some dos and don’ts?

I would tell other aspiring designers and entrepreneurs to find their niche in the market. Don’t try to be someone you are not – be a trendsetter and not a follower!
