A Fashionable Q&A with… Ridgeback Sports Owner Thelonious “TJ” Johnson

In NewsWhistle’s weekly question-and-answer series, Clara Morgan speaks with some of the world’s top beauty and style influencers and finds out more about their lives and careers.

This week, Clara speaks with Thelonious “TJ” Johnson, owner of Ridgeback Sports in Callicoon, NY, in the Catskills. At his store, he and his wife decided to create a mecca for kids and adults to find their inner athlete and get outside to explore the beautiful terrain.

Before moving to Upstate New York, Johnson was a premiere personal trainer in New York City, with clientele including Anderson Cooper and Marc Jacobs. He also has made numerous appearances on TV in commercials for companies such as Old Spice and Gillette and on shows including All My Children and on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. 1. What is Ridgeback Sports, what motivated you to launch it?

Ridgeback Sports is a sport store located in the Catskills. We opened the sport store to bring an outlet for local kids and adults to express their inner athlete. The Delaware River is located 100 yards from our store and we offer bike rides, kayaking, paddle boarding, long boarding, hiking, one-on-one training. People come to our store to feel the epic-ness!

2. What led you to leave you New York City to move to Sullivan County?

Growing up in the town as a child and never having any sport outlets! I was reading reports that Sullivan County is the second unhealthiest place in New York and being from there I wanted to change that. We also wanted to start a family outside of the city, and upstate NY is a great place to raise a child.
