Typically, you’re either commit to being an corporate exec or an artist. In the case of Cassady Winston, he’s dedicated himself to both career paths.
Winston, 31, is a Hong Kong-based HR executive by day — and a DJ and nightclub owner at night.
It’s a pretty remarkable feat. Most of us are just content with settling down after a hard day’s work. But Winston is proof that all you need is drive, along with a love of ice coffee and soy milk, to make anything possible.
Winston’s Hong Kong story began six years ago, when the San Francisco native moved to Asia after being recruited to head a HR department for an international company.
Wanting to keep up with the artistic and musical pursuits that shaped his life in the U.S., Winston soon entered the Hong Kong nightlife scene.
He began spinning dancehall, hip-hop and D&B tracks as DJ Enso. And in April of 2011, he opened his own venue, XXX Gallery, a popular art gallery and nightclub, which will soon be moving to a bigger space in Hong Kong.
For Winston, it’s about growing professionally and keeping balance while fulfilling his creative side and exploring as many artistic ideas as possible.
Luckily, there’s a day and a night – and there’s people like Winston not holding back and following their dreams wherever they may take them.
The NewsWhistle Q&A with Cassady Winston, HR exec, DJ, Nightclub Owner

Age (if you want to give it up): 31
Birthplace: San Francisco, Calif., USA

Occupation: HR Exec/DJ/Founder of XXX Gallery
What’s the funniest or saddest thing that’s happened to you this week?
I heard a friend tell me a story of how she had to put her dog to sleep, while holding him at the vet. (that was sad, not funny)
What’s your favorite movie? And why?
Difficult question to answer… I’d probably say “Dead Man” by Jarmusch. “Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind” is a close runner-up. Both are unabashedly romantic, sentimental stories about love, loss, death… but are constructed in such a creative, modern way. Formally, these movies are so poetic, and this is used to great effect as it is actually intertwined with the thematic substance. This is really very rare.
What’s the biggest risk you took in life?
Moving to Hong Kong in 2007 without knowing anyone was a risk, but really such a no-brainer. More recently, I guess opening XXX Gallery on my own has been a larger risk… but it’s been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve done.
If you could go back in time and do one thing over, what would that be?
If I could go back to high school, I’d probably step to a lot more girls . . . I still remember a lot of their names.
Tell us your favorite joke:
I don’t like jokes… real life is funny enough without trying to force it.
What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
I used to have a really bad stuttering problem and it held me back as a child. Got over that shit.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard?
Something about how short life is, and how none of this shit even matters anyway, so at least go and do a lot of stuff. Ain’t nothing to lose anyway.
Who’s your favorite celebrity? And why?
I’m like actually a big fan of Drake … I’m probably supposed to be ashamed of that but I’m not. That’s my man there.
What’s your strangest phobia or superstition?
I never learned how to swim, so when I’m on a boat I get nervous. I just have trouble accepting a body of water as something substantial that can support me, I feel almost like I’m at a great height looking down… seriously I cannot chill when I’m on a boat or walking along a pier.
Last, but not least, is there anything you want to pitch, promote or discuss?
And a bonus curve question, what are five to ten current tunes people should be listening to right now?
TNGHT – Higher Ground
Falcons – Team Supreme
Flosstradamus – Roll Up (Baauer remix)
Juicy J – Who Da Neighbors
Dub Phizix – Marka
Champion feat Princess Nyah – Crazy (Terror Danjah & DOK remix)
