AWOPBAMBOOM Vol. 1 – Music Tips 4 Music People

Welcome to our first installment of AWOPBAMBOOM, NewsWhistle’s fun round-up of music tips, news, and reviews. Enjoy!

COVER TO HEAR:

Low’s version of Rihanna’s “Stay” is welcome here. The Sub Pop band recorded it for the “Rock For Kids” music education program in Chicago.

***

A BAND TO LIKE: Mansions. Spin just premiered a tune off their “Doom Loop” album coming out in November. The song’s called “Climbers” and, with its roots in pop and distortion, sounds just as good, if not better, than anything to come off their solid 2011 LP, “Dig Up The Dead.”

SLIME TIME:

As judged by their video “Flowers”, TRAAMS is British trio to watch . . . or wash . . . Their debut full-length, “Grin”, by way of Fat Cat Records, will drop on September 24th.

An aside: The Fat Cat Records label is looking to live up to its name. Also in their lovely litter . . . Forest Fire  . . .

BAND NAME OF THE WEEK: Gringo Star

NEW TUNES FOR YOU:

Phantogram plays a sold-out Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 22. A North American tour begins October 6. If you can’t check them out live, give a listen to their “Black Out Days” below . . .

Greek-born, Milan-based producer Larry Gus will soon join Cut Copy for his first North American tour. Here’s Gus’ remix of “James Pants’ The Night Patrols (A Man Asleep)”.

Heavenly Beat’s new album, “Prominence”, is out October 15th on the Captured Tracks label. One of its first singles is “Honest.” It’s a good one, pinky swear, and makes us want to hear more from John Pena, the man behind the “Heavenly Beat” curtain.

We really don’t want to promote this tune because we fear too many bar fights are gonna break out because of it. Nevertheless, “I’m Only Joking” by the “KONGOS” is a joyous sonic stomper from a couple years out, and deserves a responsible listen.

***

If you like punk, Joy Division or anything Nordic, you’re in for treat. We nearly wet ourselves when we heard “Flesh and Bone” by the “Holograms”. Don’t say we didn’t warn you:

Slowing things down, AWAPBAMBOOM is soft on this tune and video from “Volcano Choir”. It’s called “Byegone”, a perfect close-out to your summer days.

A VIDEO CLOSER:

Joshua Tillman AKA Father John Misty turns his song “I’m Writing A Novel” into a music video. It’s got country-music bounce, ride-a-long lyrics, and scenes of Tillman living his life while roping in fun, aggression, love, loneliness, and abandon. The song and video have heart. The journey is jangly, tipsy and real as Tillman seems both free and boxed as the hearse that cruises by him. We know it might sound strange, but we can’t help but think Tillman’s song is a nod to “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” And if that’s the case, we give Mr. Tillman/Father Misty even more credit.

FINALLY . . .

If we ever direct a movie, this guy’s scoring it. Meet Nils Frahm, a serious composer, and we mean serious . . .
