Battle of the Breakfast Bands:
Spoon vs. Interpol

BATTLE OF THE BREAKFAST BANDS – WHERE THERE ARE NO RULES. ONLY TWO BANDS. AND BREAKFAST.

Time: 9:15 a.m.

Location:  My kitchen, Midwest, USA

Anything out of the ordinary?: People that know me sort of peg me as into punk rock.  I do love it for sure.

Let’s be honest, the first thing I ever purchased for my daughter, whilst she was but a fetus… a pink RAMONES onezie.

A few years ago, your average indie rock put me to sleep.  Dull, whiney, depressing, yuk.

But as I get a bit older, I’m kind of surprising myself at what music is appealing to me.

Sheepishly, I admit, I’m coming around to some indie bands.

This summer I saw Spoon for the first time.  I wouldn’t have crossed the street to see Spoon in the past.

Been taking my daughter to the same festival for three years running and Spoon was headlining the bill (sadly, the RAMONES onezie no longer fits her).

After I saw the show, I was floored, Spoon rocked it.  Well, floored?  This was an outdoor fest, I guess I was grassed? Some fans definitely were.

Interpol, another band the never really did for me.

But again, saw them by proxy as they were the opening act for U2 a few years back and I was sort of digging it.

I might have been the only one listening, cuz when you are the opening act for U2 in a football stadium, well let’s face it, no one cares. Even if your own mother was in Gold Circle seating, she wouldn’t notice.

Don’t blame me, it’s rock n roll, thems the rules.

What I ate: Sesame bagel with one egg; cherries; three cups black coffee.

Facing Off:  Spoon’s “Rent I Pay” vs. Interpol’s “All the Rage Back Home”

Band Selection Rationale:  Both Spoon and Interpol have been on a bit of a hiatus since 2010 of making records and now they have some new material.

So, why not take my new found appreciation for indie rock, have a listen of their new stuff and face ’em off.

Spoon

Interpol

Winner: Spoon, “Rent I Pay”

Why: This was easy, maybe unfair, but Spoon wins in a heartbeat.

It’s so great for the morning that I think I’m changing my alarm ring to this song.

Great groove, positive vibe, happy tune, never bad things in the morning to get you going.

“All the Rage Back Home” is a really great song, it is, don’t get me wrong.

It’s a bit jarring though, it’s faster and Interpol as a whole has that dark, dreary edge to it, not the way to start the day.

That said, I am pumped to hear both of these records.

Spoon’s ‘They Want My Soul’ is out Aug 5 (Aug 4 in UK)

Interpol’s ‘El Pintor’ is out Sep 9.

Get at it.
