Hopefully all your Thanksgiving leftovers have been eaten or discarded by now, unfortunately for moviegoers that’s not the case as the top films will likely remain the same this weekend with only one new release daring to confront the phalanx of holiday shoppers and Christmas tree hunters. FYI–more Christmas trees are bought this week than any other. Priorities, man.
That one film? Fox’s horror flick, “The Pyramid,” unearths itself in moderate wide release in just under 600 theaters. You’ve never heard of it? Well, can’t say I’m surprised as it took me awhile just to dig up a poster and trailer. Looks like your run-of-the-mill cursed tomb film low-light situations and shaky cam wham-bam. Looks to be heading towards $2M-$3M tops.
That means it’s “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 1” for the threepeat. Ho-hum. You just can’t stop a good propaganda pic…
Luckily in limited release there’s a film that is actually worth a damn: Fox Searchlight’s “Wild,” starring Reese Witherspoon. In 21 theaters, director Marc-Jean Vallee’s follow-up to “Dallas Buyer’s Club” should secure Witherspoon an Oscar nod, and just might put her back on the A-list where she belongs.
It’s been a long time since Witherspoon has really challenged herself in a starring role, and as Vallee’s credentials can attest to, he is certainly one of the most actor-friendly directors working today. He pushes all the right buttons on them. Can’t wait to see this one.
