A good relationship is one that involves two people who love, adore, and care about each other. It is free of anger and resentment. Expert matchmaking mother-daughter duo Janis and Carly Spindel (below) give their top five tips to a healthier, nurturing, respectful relationship.
Talking, and I mean really talking, to your boyfriend or girlfriend is a great way to keep your relationship on track. You have to make sure you do not let your thoughts fester inside of you. If something bothers you, voice it. If you are happy about something, tell your partner! Communicating about everything and anything is essential.
Respect Each Other
You have to respect your partner to be in a healthy and nurturing relationship. Do you like them as a person? Do you admire them? Do you think they are kind? It’s important to treat each other with kindness and compassion. When you are kind to each other, you are maintaining respect for each other.
Spend Time Apart
In a relationship, a little time apart is healthy. You have to maintain your sense of self and independence. Spending every night together is not a good idea. You have to make sure you make time for yourself and the things you love. You do not want to have your significant other be your priority and neglect your friends or family. You cannot be a good boyfriend or girlfriend if you lose your identity.
Trust is essential in a great relationship. You need to trust your partner with anything. When you trust each other, you are building a good foundation for the future.
Honesty is just as important as trust. Be open about everything. Often times, what you are thinking may be hard for your partner to hear, but you have to say it. As long as you speak in a sympathetic and considerate way, your partner should respect anything you say.
