***

In NewsWhistle’s weekly question-and-answer series, Clara Morgan speaks with some of her favorite influencers and finds out more about their lives and careers. This week, Clara speaks with Carlos Orozco, Managing Director of luxury Mexican resort Mayakoba Residences

Carlos knew early on that he wanted a career in luxury real estate development, and graduated from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente, A.C. with a degree in Industrial Engineering, before embarking on a marketing and development career in the high end resort industry. He has held his current position since 2011, and resides in picturesque Playa del Carmen with his wife and kids. In his spare time, he likes to go Go Karting or ride his motorcycle along the beautiful coastline.

Mayakoba is set on 240 hectares of jungle and tropical mangroves bordering the white sand beaches of the Mexican Caribbean. Its natural beauty is the inspiration for the most exclusive and private resort destination on the coveted Riviera Maya. Mayakoba Residences is a celebration of luxury embracing nature.

Read more about Carlos’s sources of inspiration, favorite international dining spots, and preferred Mexico locations in this week’ Q&A.

1. When and how did you first realize that you wanted to work in the industry and business you are in?

I was probably 10 years old. My father is a construction contractor, and I accompanied him to a site; it was a beautiful hotel near Puerto Vallarta. The man giving us the tour explained the concept and architectural motif of the place and service, high end and ecologically responsible. I was very impressed with this and found it intriguing how people could have the possibility to own a piece of such a private property as a second home. I didn’t quite know yet how and in what way, but I definitely knew I wanted to be a part of that world.

2. Any celebrity clients or memorable stories related to your business that you want to share?

Our clienteles’ (guest and owners) privacy is something very important to us. All I can say is that Mayakoba has hosted a considerable amount of A- listers, ranging from movie stars, athletes, and socialites to prominent politicians and businessmen. On a couple occasions, we have hosted private parties at Rosewood Mayakoba that gathered a few dozen of these VIPs to kick back and enjoy themselves; for many of them we are a well needed break from their otherwise hectic agendas.

3. What is a typical day like for you? And what do you like to do on a day off?

There is no typical day! My job is very exciting, there is a lot of traveling, meeting new people, trying different food (I love food by the way). What I know for sure is that I have to be ready to adapt and to re-adjust my schedule every two seconds. I spend my days off with my wife and kids; on my personal time I do Go Karting and if I have any time left, I ride my motorcycle.

4. What is the next big thing in your industry?

There’s many exciting high end real estate projects exploding around the Caribbean and in Mexico; this represents a lot of growth in the segment and some competition too. I’m very competitive and also confident in how differentiated Mayakoba is. I look forward to visiting those new properties and for them to start operating.

5. What are people doing differently today, compared to 10-15 years ago?

Exactly 10 to 15 years ago we were living in a real estate bubble, everything was for sale and everything sold out. You didn’t really need hard work or any true skills to succeed. Now the economy has bounced back and people are buying again, but it is a much more educated type of buyer. You really need to prepare your product, sales team and overall operation to the utmost level in order to succeed.
