The Sweet Smell Of Success – A Talk with Scent Creator Jodie Chan

***

Scent creator Jodie Chan says that “the fusion of dark and fragrant smells of essential oils” — as well as her unconventional tastes — serve as the foundation for her company esscentric.

We say that her line of perfumes and colognes are just plain wonderful. They’re so good, in fact, that we’re promoting one of them in our Winter Catalogue.

We sat down with Jodie at a Hong Kong coffee shop at little while back and marveled at her beautiful smelling creations, which are packaged in sleek roll-on containers and can be ordered with their own carry pouches.

Customize a scent, or purchase a popular fragrance, it’s up to you. And the skies are the limit, with each oil smelling better than the next.

Everyone has a scent that matches their esscentric side. What’s yours?

The NewsWhistle Q&A with Fragrance Designer Jodie Chan

1. How did you become a fragrance designer?

After receiving my aromatherapy diploma, I found that no one marketed pure essential oils as a modern lifestyle brand. I decided to create my own line of fragrances. And as I’m very addicted to perfume, I wanted to use natural ingredients.

I create everything in my head, creating new scents through just a feeling or gaining inspiration from a song, a visual, or a fashion trend… It’s hard to tell sometimes.

2. We’ve tried a few of your products and really adore them.

a. Can you tell us more about your fragrances? How many different types do you produce? How do you make the scents? How many ingredients go into making them?

Right now, there are six kinds of blended scents, made with many different kinds of essential oils.

b. Why did you choose roll-on applicators instead of spray bottles?

A roll-on bottle is the best way for my fragrance oils to stick to your skin.

c. And what should people know about your two types of necklace holders?

The reason I chose a chain and leather holster for individual perfume oils is so that people could carry it and use it anytime as they want. Also, it makes for a great fashion accessory. The best perfume is one you can bring to a party or travel destination.

d. Finally, we saw your diffuser. It looks really different and cool. What does it do exactly? And how is it different from other similar devices on the market?

This diffuser uses cold nebulisation, a method that does not heat essential oils, allowing their therapeutic properties to remain. This diffuser is perfect for you to enjoy your daily aromatherapy. It’s easy to use and can fit at home or your workplace. This diffuser purifies the air allowing you to cleanse and relax your mind.

3. Other than your own fragrances, what’s your favorite perfume for women and cologne for men? Why?

My favorite brand is Frederic Malle. Each of their perfumes are created by a different perfumer, and you can feel their distinct characters.

4. Who are your design and style idols? Why? Have you ever met them? If so, what happened?

I don’t have specific style idols. I get inspired by everyone around me. I love to talk with interesting people.

Lately the one that impressed  me is Her. The movie spoke to me, I particularly like the way it handled the theme of communication.

6. If you could go back in time and do one thing over, what would that be?

I wouldn’t; I’m happy with my life.
