Lone Deer Laredo – Six Crucial Questions for Lead Singer Paola Suhonen

***

Lone Deer Laredo is a dream-folk duo from Helsinki, Finland.

According to the band’s marketing materials: The band “is made up of Paola Suhonen — founder of the Finnish fashion line Ivana Helskini — and Olli Happonen of New Silver Girl  — a rock band produced by Gordon Raphael (the Strokes, Regina Spektor, Hinds).

“The two created this musical duo on a whim one night after meeting at a bar in Helsinki. Realizing in that moment that they were musical soulmates, they quickly wrote their first song, formed the band and haven’t looked back since.”

Lone Deer Laredo just released their debut self-titled album — and it’s a good one, with sweet, commanding vocals accentuating twangy guitar riffs.

It’s music perfect for carefree rides through the long plains or daydreams on the grass when bison roam under blue skies and wispy clouds.

1. What is your earliest musical memory?

My father sang me lullabies when I was a child. Those are probably my earliest memories of music. One of them, Squirrel’s Song by Aleksis Kivi, really stands out as a truly beautiful moment.

2. What has been your most embarrassing musical moment?

As a child, I played violin in my school’s classical orchestra. Sometimes I was pretty lazy when it comes to rehearsing, so at one concert I didn’t have a clue about the songs. I ended up just moving the bow along with others. And it was a long concert!

3. What do you like and dislike about touring?

Touring for me is a kind of cinematic experience, a constantly moving adventure in time and space. And 100% positive thing. I love road trips.

4. What is  your favorite record store, anywhere in the world?

Hmm.. It is really hard to choose one. Amoeba in LA is pretty good for sure.

5. Other than your own music, what is your favorite song or album of all-time? Why?

Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons. It is hauntingly beautiful music. Gram Parsons was a true poet with an angelic voice. And the quality of the songs really is immortal.

6. You wake up in a seedy Berlin hotel room with no recollection of the past 96 hours. Who is your first call?

My duo partner Olli to get me out of there immediately.
