Music Talks Justice – Photos From The 2018 Winter JazzFest – New York

It may have been a cold and rainy New York, but the 14th annual Winter JazzFest, from January 10th to 17th, brought plenty of heat.

Thousands braved the weather to hear over a hundred performances spread at eleven venues throughout the East and West Village.

It was an impossible dash to see all, but festival-goers were rewarded at each venue to hear a mix of established voices and the new combinations from Brooklyn to Norway, from West Coast to East Coast.

A plethora of sounds from Stefon Harris and Blackout Feat, Marc Rebot’s Songs of Resistance, and Nicole Mitchell — WinterJazzFest’s Artists in Residence — performing back to back at the New School Tishman Auditorium, all very different, all speaking of resistance in unison, began the first night of the JazzFest marathon.

Saturday night witnessed the vocalist Jazzmeia Horn activate the audience with an arousing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” after a stinging “Summertime” calling out Trump’s misdeeds, “People Make the World Go Round,” and “Moanin,” to finish out a breathless and masterful set weaving her septet and audience along in consonance.

Sasha Berliner Quintet (New School Jazz Building), Ranky Tanky (the Bitter End), and Rohey (at Nublu) showed the WinterJazzFest’s powerful range of mixing upcoming new exquisite voices among the established loved sounds.

Ravi Coltrane and David Virles’ mesmerizing duo from last year returned as a crisp crowd-pleasing sextet presenting Universal Consciousness Melodic Mediations of Alice Coltrane on Sunday evening at Le Poisson Rouge.

The photographs in this collection are a very small sampling of the many performances illuminating the first New Year’s weeks in New York.
