ROAD TRIP: CROATIA, MONTENEGRO & BOSNIA… PART 1 of 10

Part 1 – THREE TIPS ON PICKING A TRAVEL DESTINATION

Montenegro, Bosnia – we had no idea we’d end up there. All we knew was that we were headed to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Why there? I have a travel philosophy, and it goes something like this…

  • Travel slightly pre-season (you get to avoid the crowds, have a flexible itinerary, and perhaps, even walk into a hotel after checking out the vibe and get a room at a discount)
  • Stretch your currency (go in right before they are about to go Euro, or find a place that is going through a devaluation – you’re also helping out the local economy!)
  • Go to untouched lands (avoid places where you can’t tell whether you are in the East Village of New York or the East Village equivalent of Berlin or the East Village equivalent of Amsterdam (Zara, H&M, Starbucks being the tell-tale signs)

We landed in Dubrovnik to commence our 10-day seaside vacation, filled with sun, sand, and sails. But before we even got there our iPhone weather app predicted 10 days of rain, not really conducive to frolicking on the beach, let alone setting sail or hiring a catamaran.

Perhaps the silver lining in the cloud (pun intended) was that we stayed true to our philosophy of traveling slightly pre-season, and had landed at Dubrovnik airport with no hotel reservation or set itinerary.

Of course the execution of our philosophy was aided by our busy schedules where we didn’t have a single free moment to plan out our vacation, busily flicking away on the Bberry to tie up last minute flurries at work even as we were headed towards the airport.

In any case we were fully flexible with what we could do with this trip, and didn’t need to worry about canceling boats or hotel reservations.

Since we weren’t quite sure where we were even headed, we hopped on a bus from the airport that had huge sign saying they were headed towards the Dubrovnik Old City Gates.

When you are traveling without plans, sometimes it is a good idea to hop on a bus headed towards a landmark – you’re not at the mercy of a local taxi driver and his commissions.

Our bus weaved down to the fortified gates of the city center and dropped us off under drenching skies.

We picked up our rain-splashed bags. And without cover or shelter… the adventure began.
