Rating The Airlines:
Hong Kong Airlines

I bought this ticket on a discounted website last minute and this was the cheapest flight with the best time slots available. With considerable shame, I will admit that I associated them in my mind with being a “no-go” airline based upon a horror story a friend of mine gave me from a flight a few years back. This said, I stand well-corrected on my opinion (which was not based upon a first-hand experience anyway).

On one hand, there was only an upward trajectory in terms of possibility from the low, misguided opinion base off of which I was working; and, on the other hand, it was just a really delightful flight in the most pleasantly surprising way possible. The service was attentive, the food was edible, getting on and off the plane was quick, and there was a generous free checked baggage allowance.

Hong Kong Airlines was registered in Hong Kong quite recently, in 2006, and has been awarded the 4-Star rating from SKYTRAX for three consecutive years and the “World’s Most Improved Airline” in 2014. The Airlines’ service network currently includes almost 30 cities regionally, with a focus on China but with destinations in Japan, Thailand and Bali.

Pros:

  • Attentive, helpful service
  • Free standard baggage allowance up to 20kg
  • Cost efficient
  • Quick, easy boarding process
  • Decent in-flight meal service

***

Cons:

  • An up-to-date inflight entertainment system only available on certain flights
  • Web-site is not the easiest to navigate

***

Based out of Hong Kong (obviously), the airport is one of the best in the world in terms of efficiency, food and shopping options, and getting to and from (as well as in and out). And, especially if you live in the region, it is a recommendable experience.
