ROAD TRIP: CROATIA, MONTENEGRO & BOSNIA… PART 3 of 10

PART 3 – AVOID MADE IN CHINA STUFF

Finding a window of a moment when the rain subsided a bit, we followed the pizzeria owner’s advice and walked into the travel agency Stradun right inside Dubrovnik’s Pile Gate.

We had only one criteria – wi-fi – and the agency aptly sent us towards a lovely apartment inside the walls, where we were greeted by a sweet old lady who gave us one of the longest and most complicated wi-fi passwords to use.

We woke up in the morning in an aristocrat’s beautiful heavy mahogany bed that was dressed in plush red velvet, and given the rain, we decided to take our adventures indoors and go shopping.

In this global economy nowadays, cute little souvenir shops, that look like they are selling local craft or antiques, are actually all selling look-a-likes made in China. I have nothing against gadgets that crossed an ocean or a couple of seas to get to where they are, except when they’re masquerading as local craft made by grandma down the street.

I can spot goods made in China a mile away, but this takes a bit of experience. In case you haven’t developed the “China-dar” yet, here is a tip: There are only two places to shop inside the Dubrovnik Old City Gates: (1) Aqua, a nautical-themed store with dresses, blankets, towels, and beach bags of amazing fabric and quality; and (2) Modni Kantun, a local designer association of sorts with creations by young and upcoming local designers: cool and unique jewelry, and one of a kind dresses (Zlatarska 3; +385 20 321 241). At travel time, there was a sister location in Split, as well.
