1. How long have you been a professional designer? And what is your earliest design memory?

I launched Black Halo in 2002. I was originally planning to be a lawyer, but when the time came to go to law school, I knew deep down in my heart that a career in the legal field wasn’t for me. I began reflecting on the moments in my life where I felt most passionate and fulfilled, and quickly realized that most memories tied back to the clothes I was wearing. In that moment, I knew that my true calling was fashion design.

2. What has been the best design trend in the last five to ten years? And what has been the worst?

Over the last five to ten years, I think that there has been a significant rise in clothes tailored to the modern woman – someone who is successful, hard working, and has an active social life, all while wanting to look her best. This has always been Black Halo’s girl, so it’s great to see the rest of the industry moving in this direction.

In terms of the worst trend – I don’t like anything that puts women in a box. Women are so many different things at once, and our clothes and personal style should reflect that – not who the world thinks we should be.

3. What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve heard? And do you follow it?

The most important business advice I follow is to never take no for an answer – I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t always followed this mantra.

My favorite place in the world to shop is Paris – it really can’t be beat when it comes to fashion, art and design. I mean, it’s Paris!

5. What music, movie, book, or magazine gets you ready to sketch or brainstorm?

I find inspiration everywhere and from everyday things – films, TV, museums, social outings, and my travels. I am also an avid people watcher. Our culture is always evolving, and therefore so is my inspiration.

6. What is the question a person should ask you, and how would you answer?

Question: Why is the message of female empowerment so important to you?

Answer: The message of female empowerment is important to me because it’s time. Addressing and fixing gender inequality is way overdue.

7. If you can have one photographer shoot an advertising campaign for you, who would that be and why?

I would have to say Annie Liebovitz – she is such an icon, and her work constantly inspires me. To have her shoot a Black Halo campaign would be an absolute dream.
