PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE:

My designs are to enhance women’s natural body shape and confidence. I’d describe my personal style as fit, feminine, and comfortable. I rarely wear oversized clothing, but once in a while I wrap myself in a blanket coat that I made for those I-need-my-blanket days.

1. How long have you been a professional designer? And what is your earliest design memory?

I’ve been designing full time since 2013. I started designing when I was a little kid. My mom is an accessory designer, and I grow up in her factory playing with fabrics. I used scrap fabrics to make dresses for my dolls.

2. What has been the best design trend in the last five to ten years? And what has been the worst?

I admire Alexander McQueen’s highly artistic and tailored style. He created a distinctive trend that’s articulated and wild. I don’t believe there’s a trend that’s absolutely “the worst” because fashion is a part of the culture that we live in. Each style has its place.

3. What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve heard? And do you follow it?

“Do what you love.” Oh yes, I love what I do, and I look forward to my work every day. I am addicted.

4. What is your favorite place to shop, anywhere in the world, and why?

It’s a tough question. I usually wear my designs. But I love shopping for shoes in Tokyo. I have small feet, and I can always find my size there.

5. What music, movie, book or magazine gets you ready to sketch or brainstorm?

I have many musician friends, and I am always excited to listen to their new creations. I also love classical music, and books about philosophy, architecture, and contemporary arts.

6. What is the question a person should ask you, and how would you answer?

“Shall we meet?” The answer is “Yes!” I prefer getting to know people in person than via social media or text messages.

7. If you can have one photographer shoot an advertising campaign for you, who would that be and why?

Ahhh that’s a tough question! I am very lucky to work with many talented photographers. For the Kovasky collection, I shot the lookbook with Tom Concordia and the editorial campaign with Alex Beauchesne. Both are brilliant photographers who really captured the sense of freedom and empowerment of the garments, and I can’t wait to work with them again.
