Shark Sandwich, Vol. 3 – Speedy Album Reviews For Those On The Go

SHARK SANDWICH – ALBUM REVIEWS, MARCH 25, 2016, Vol. 3

Music reviews come in all sizes, but you’re busy and do not have time for flowery language… or sentences, really.

Spinal Tap gave the world the greatest album review of all time:

Welcome to our “Shark Sandwich” —  razor-sharp reviews that sum up an album in three sentences or less.

Bob Mould – Patch The Sky

When Mould preaches, you’d better listen. This is a guy who has been around the rock and roll block so many times, he owns the whole damn subdivision. He has other musical sides, but on Patch The Sky he is playing to his strengths (according to this reporter). From “Voices In My Head” to “Monument,” he is rocking the listener full-time.

The Joy Formidable – Hitch

Hitch will make you feel like you’ve known The Joy Formidable your whole life. Manic Street Preachers is there. My Bloody Valentine is there. Hell, maybe even Rush is in there somewhere. It’s guitar rock with dynamics to spare. High-energy, sweeping, dreamy, and explosive, Hitch will scratch your itch.

Best Song: “A Second In White”

The Thermals – We Disappear

Lo-fi heroes, The Thermals, return ready to kick everyone’s ass with We Disappear. Definitely not the sound of a band going away, everything instrument and voice is pushed to the fore. The Thermals get in your face before they crawl into your brain and set up shop in your heart.

Best Song: “Thinking Of You”

RJD2 – Dame Fortune

After the guitar-a-rama of the previous albums, we end this week’s Sandwich with the supremely spacey, funky jams of RJD2. Add some Money Mark to a bit of Massive Attack, and stir in some old R&B along with a dash of Pink Floyd for good measure, and you start to have an idea of the sound of Dame Fortune. The whole album is a trip worth taking.

Rating: 4 out 5 whistles

Best Song: “A New Theory”
