Adam DeGross is a music promoter and self-taught photographer who lives in Minneapolis, MN.
He’s also one of the nicest and most mild mannered guys you’ll ever meet — a far cry from some of his aggressive and powerful images that capture the punk, hardcore and alternative music scene.
DeGross will be showing his first-class snaps at a special two night event (Oct. 10th and 11th) at The Abstracted Gallery in Minneapolis.

1. What’s the funniest or saddest thing that’s happened to you this week?
Funniest thing that happened to me this week? Well, I’m not proud to admit it, but I went to Cowboy Jacks (a very lame bar in Minneapolis). I only went because the show I was at across the street let out at the exact same time as a Paul McCartney show, and there was no way I was going to get out of the city for an hour or two.
I tried to pass the time by asking the McCartney fans how the Bruce Springsteen show was? They didn’t think it was as funny as I did.
I got bored of that, and realized my friend was working the door at Cowboy Jacks, directly across the street. He let me bypass the really long line, when I was in there I realized I was in the D-Bag lion’s den.
This one thing that happened there that night kind of sums up my whole time spent at Cowboy Jacks. I saw some girl all dressed up, REALLY drunk, fall over a trash can, spilling trash on her, all while the song “Turn Down For What” was playing. That was the funniest… and I guess saddest moment of my week so far.
2. What’s your favorite song and/or band? And why?
I don’t know how many people know this about me, but I love old reggae, so one of my favorite songs of all time is “54 46 Was My Number” or “My Daily Food” by Toots and The Maytals.
Favorite bands? Cock Sparrer, The Smiths, The Pogues, Rancid/Op Ivy (No shame) Blitz, Dillinger 4, Danzig all these bands mean something to me for different reasons.
3. What’s the biggest risk you took in life?
Just fully committing to booking shows and my photography. It’s believing in the unknown, I have no reassurance that this will be anything, but for some reason, I fully believe in it. It’s hard to describe, but I think my photos are important, and will live on longer than I’m alive.
4. If you could go back in time and do one thing over, what would that be?
I don’t know, that’s a hard question, but I don’t really regret anything I’ve ever done. I was arrested once, that was no fun, I wish I could take that back, haha.
5. Tell us your favorite joke.
6. What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
I have asthma, that’s why I dont “pit hard,” haha.
7. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever heard?
Don’t start something you can’t finish.
8. Who’s your favorite celebrity? And why?
Is Danzig a celebrity? Because if he is, then it’s defiantly Danzig. I just like how ridiculous he is, and that he doesn’t give a fuck about it either. Plus [Danzig’s albums] 1 – 4 are dope.
9. What’s your strangest phobia or superstition?
I HATE the dentist. I do a lot of show booking in MN, and I have this dumb superstition that if I listen to the band I have coming the day of the show, it will be a bad show.
10. Last, but not least, is there anything you want to pitch, promote or discuss?
I’m doing a photo exhibit on October 10th and 11th at The Abstracted Gallery in Minneapolis. This will be my second time showing my work in MN, and I’m really excited about it. Here’s the Facebook link.
11. Oh, and a couple of bonus questions…
a. What are a couple photography tips for other self taught photogs?
Don’t compromise yourself, do what you want, and don’t try to copy someone else. Also, don’t listen to people if they say your work sucks, I would have quit 10 years ago if I would have listened to people like that.
b. What is your favorite and worst thing about shooting live music?
Shitty lighting conditions, and sometimes knowing that I’m annoying someone with my flash.
