Talking Christmas Music With G Matthews, Singer Of “I Don’t Want To Trim Your Tree”

Christmas music is a matter of taste. We can play it in our house for hours on end, while one of our friends immediately falls into a panic attack upon hearing it.

Whether you’re a fan of Christmas music or not, we think you’ll like G Matthews’ latest addition to the music genre.

Matthews, an alt-rock singer from California, is promoting her latest original “I Don’t Want To Trim Your Tree,” a simple pop punk sing-a-long that’s Grinch-y and fun, a contemporary ditty to spruce up your holiday playlist.

In the following one-on-one, we talk with G about her latest song and her own favorite Christmas tunes.

1. Tell us a little about yourself:

Well, I’m a California girl, born and raised. I’m quite shy and soft spoken. But when I get up on stage I’m very loud and come to life. Oh, and I love cupcakes (big smile)

2. Why did you write “I Don’t Want To Trim Your Tree?”

I thought it would be fun to have a Christmas song that was a little bit out of the box. It’s something fun that shares a mood and perspective of this season that isn’t normally talked about. I have nothing against Christmas (big smile). In fact I love Christmas. But I do know there are sometimes when we aren’t feeling as festive. So this song is for those times.

3. Other than your songs, what are your top five favorite Christmas songs? And why?

My top five Christmas songs are “White Christmas,” “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” “Little Saint Nick,” “Jingle Bell Rock,” and “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.” These songs are great classics. Mostly everyone knows them and several artists have made a cover version of these songs.

4. What’s the most cloying Christmas song ever written? And why?

I think all holiday songs have the potential to be cloying at some point  (ha ha ha Smile). Especially when played repeatedly. So it’s hard for me to say.

5. Other than your video, what’s the best Christmas music video ever made? And why?

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is the best music video, in my opinion. I like how it looks very home made with actual footage of her decorating and playing in the snow. It makes you feel cozy. And who doesn’t love a kaleidoscope feature in a video? (big smile)
