***

The Dinah, a five-day event taking place in Palm Springs, California on April 3-7,  is billed as “the largest girl party music festival in the world.”

Focusing on female empowerment, the safe-space celebration features pool parties, musical performances, comedy acts, DJs, go-go dancers, red carpet events, meet and greets, and more.

Below we talk with Mariah Hanson, the CEO and founder of the event.

1. Tell us a little about The Dinah. How did it start?

The Dinah started 29 years ago in Palm Springs at a small boutique hotel and using the Palm Springs Museum as a main event space.  It was an auspicious beginning.  We had to rent another hotel we sold so many rooms. It was a hit from the get-go.

2. Who is your main audience? Is The Dinah for ALL women or mainly the lesbian community? What is the message of the festival?

The Dinah is for all women, of course, but we primarily market to the queer women community.  Our main audience is varied, as our age range is across the board, but the greatest concentration of attendees is between 25 and 35 years old.  Our message is one of women empowerment, showcasing bold female artists who are about to take off, but who also have inspiring back stories.  We focus on celebrating our lives and creating a sense of community for five days for women of all backgrounds.

3. For first-timers to the event, what can they expect?

Five days of action packed parties with celebrity sightings, and the best in entertainment, featuring the hottest new artists of tomorrow, the nations most celebrated female DJs and some sizzling hot go go dancers.

4. Are any men allowed? None at all? Why? And what if we men want to go? 🙂

We focus our event on our women-identified attendees and would hope that men would respect the need for women to have our own space for five days but we do not deny entrance to anyone.  If a woman brings her guy friend for support, we appreciate he’s been a support and welcome him.

We have a stellar line up.  Daya headlines with Leikeli47 and Bri Steves. Kodie Shane, Dorian Electra, and Kiana Lede support.  Our comedy show features Fortune Feimster and Chaunte Wayans.

6. What has been reaction to the festival? Any criticism? How do you respond?

The reaction to the festival has been very positive.  We’re in our 29th year.  I don’t think of comments as criticism but feedback.  I think people should be heard and I believe you can always find ways to improve your event, so feedback is welcomed.

7. What is/are your favorite moment/s from a past Dinah festival or Dinah party?

Last year’s Jessie Reyez concert was my favorite so far.  What an inspirational, powerful performer and what a wise old soul.  I loved the concert and I loved chatting with her.

8. Any recommendations (books, magazines, websites, movies, songs, etc.) for women who can’t make the festival and looking to be more empowered or inspired?

Of course!  Anything by Barbara DeAngelis.  But I think we have a plethora of everyday stories of real people who are making a difference and a quick surf on the web can prove to be an inspiration snack during the day to demotivate or reinvigorate even the most depleted of souls.

9. Is there anything else you’d like to add share or discuss?

This is a not to miss year.  We are off to a strong start and the line up is one of the best we have had in years.  Kiana Lede’s show is not to be missed.  She is a strong contender for the next big thing.
