From “Out Among The Sheltering Pines” to “Maryland” to the “Future,” here’s what’s orbiting our musical universe this week.

The Helio Sequence – “Out Among The Sheltering Pines”

Cool idea here. Take songs that are over 100-years-old, in the public domain, and seek out bands to reinterpret them. The Helio Sequence is up to the challenge, tackling “Out Among The Sheltering Pines, one of ten songs found on Transference, an LP to be released by Portland’s Marmoset label.

After Hours Radio – “Maryland”

It’s as if They Might Be Giants joined forces with Peter Murphy. A good drop, any place, any hour.

Weyes Blood – “A Certain Kind”

Wow, that retro-voice — with the Karen Carpenter vibe — has just been signed to Sub-Pop. Her name is Natalie Mering — but she’s known on stage as Weyes Blood. Her debut album will arrive next year. And by the sounds of this cover song, it will have everybody talking.

Bloodrock – “A Certain Kind”

Here’s the original “A Certain Kind” from the early 1970s… if you’re in the comparing mood.

***

Pale Honey – “Get These Things Out Of My Head”

Nice percussive beat from this Swedish-based duo. Looking forward to hearing their new album, Devotion, which comes out on October 13.

***

Canon Blue – “Onyx”

A wonderfully experimental song. Imagine a solid marching beat interweaved with chants and orchestral sounds. Utterly sublime!

***

Autobahn – “Future”

We think Devo just drove their car into Joy Division. A joyous post-post-punk crash!

***

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB – “Little Thing Gone Wild”

The first single from BRMC’s newest album, which launches on January 12, 2018. HAPPY EARLY NEW YEAR!

Until next week, enjoy!
