Turkey’s Özgür Can Öney began drumming in high school.
From there it was a music story like any other.
He connected with a good teacher, continued with a band in college, and played bar gigs with friends.
Then, the story strays. In 2001, Özgür joined up with a group called “maNga” and, within a few years, he found himself part of one of the greatest Turkish acts of all time.
maNga’s sound, think “Linkin Park” or “System Of A Down,” has garnered the band millions of listeners in Europe and Asia while earning them the “Best European Act” award at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2009 as well as a runner-up win at 2010’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Now, maNga is bringing their Turkish brand of hip-hop-synth-rock to a wider audience.
Özgür and his maNga bandmates — singer Ferman Akgül, guitarist Yağmur Sarıgül (aka “Yamyam”), and bassist Cem Bahtiyar — just played New York and Los Angeles.
For those of you who missed the shows, Özgür takes front and center, introducing himself to NewsWhistle readers, telling his favorite joke, not missing a beat.
Without further ado . . .
