A Video Tour of Konstantin Bessmertny’s Ad Lib Exhibit – Macau Art Museum

***

If you’re were recently in Macau, and saw Konstantin Bessmertny’s latest art show, consider yourself very lucky.

Bessmertny’s AD LIB exhibit at the Macau Art Museum was hardly improvised; each piece was consciously littered with mirth and mischief, and likely left you tickled and inspired.

If you didn’t have the chance to see the show (which ran from November 2016 to May 2017), fortune is still on your side.

Bessmertny’s son, Maxim, has produced the following video, which features Konstantin walking the viewer through the exhibit.

The guided tour is charming, informative, and entertaining. We really enjoyed it, and think you will, too!

For us, AD LIB was about “attention to detail” – and how each part made the entire show even more funny and fascinating.

  • The diorama against the wall – yes, that’s a miniature scene from The Godfather.
  • The open container hanging from the wall is the world’s most expensive bottle of wine.
  • The Victorian-style painting shows Konstantin’s dog, who just had an accident.
  • Rasputin’s eyes are decorated with Swarovski crystals.
  • Are you kidding us? Is that a Birkin handbag, the world’s most desired handbag from Hermes? It certainly is. And it’s painted with a Marxist motto.

Konstantin’s pieces aren’t just making things easy targets. It’s about paths crossing — East meeting West — while the world ages and his talents morph, tantalize, and delight.

A painting will reference a quote of a movie or an author.

A bitten baguette – now hardened by time – will be used as a prop.

A Mercedes, a boxing glove, a sculpture are present – but they seem like they’ve appeared from one of his paintings.

As far as exhibits go, this is as close you’ll get to Wonderland. Dadaists, surrealists, and early popsters would be proud.

We’re friends with Konstantin — and promote his book The Last Dumpling — for a reason.

He’s one of the best artists on the planet. Hands down… or gloves up.

Our photos from the exhibit follow. Once again, enjoy!
