BATTLE OF THE BREAKFAST BANDS – WHERE THERE ARE NO RULES. ONLY TWO BANDS. AND BREAKFAST.
Time: 8:45 a.m.
Location: My kitchen, Midwest, USA
Anything out of the ordinary?:
Bad Religion just released a new record just in time for the holidays, aptly titled “Christmas Songs.”
I was excited like a kid on Christmas morning to hear this thing! And c’mon, if the irony of Bad Religion belting out lyrics like “Christ, the everlasting Lord” escapes you then kindly donate your punk rock membership card to those less fortunate then you. That’s what Christmas is all about, right?
I know what you are thinking, Christmas songs, too early here. But it’s already November. It’s not like I’m Macy’s and selling ornaments on Labor Day.
What I ate: A cheddar cheese sandwich with two cups black coffee.
Facing Off: ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ vs. ‘American Jesus’
Band Selection Rationale:
In a cheeky move (I suspect to stick with the baby Jesus theme) the band has slipped in their previously recorded ‘American Jesus’ as the last song of this record so I decided to have the band face off with themselves.
Winner: Christmas Bad Religion!
Why: Hark! The Herald Angels sing!
The acapella intro on this song is both gorgeous and gritty. The harmonies and rasp of Greg Graffin’s voice make it an instant winner and quite the pleasant morning song.
But with those angelic sounds comes a speedy tempo, warning you might be in for a faster ride, so hold onto your coffee and your sled!
By the time the guitars kick in and BR’s signature driving beat unfold, I’m focusing more on the song than my cheddar cheese sammy.
No disrepect to “American Jesus.” It’s a standard punk anthem for sure, a classic, but I’m more into this when the sound guy at a venue rocks it between band sets.
Happy Holidays!
