BATTLE OF THE BREAKFAST BANDS – WHERE THERE ARE NO RULES. ONLY TWO BANDS. AND BREAKFAST.
Time: 7:30 a.m.
Location: Rental car, on a highway, in rural Oklahoma, USA.
Anything out of the ordinary?: I was out of town for work and had an early 2.5 hour drive to make a 10 a.m. meeting. Grabbed my free breakfast from the hotel lobby and hit the road.
What I ate: An English muffin, a banana, one apple, a serving of raspberry yogurt, and a single cup of black coffee.

Band Selection Rationale: I was in a rental car with no playlist of my own . . . so I let the universe decide this battle, the 80’s classic rock universe that is.
You see, when you’re driving through rural Oklahoma, your choices when scanning the FM dial are Christian radio, country radio, right-wing radio and more Christian radio. I didn’t even have the stones to go down the path of the AM dial.
Perhaps Battle of the Bible passages is for another time.
At least the music gods chimed in and I landed on the faint reception of a classic rock station and I rolled with the next two songs.
Winner: I can’t even say it . . .
Why: It bugs me to admit this, but The Police win this round. It really stings. Def Leppard’s Pyromania is such a nostalgic record for me. I’m sure I discovered most of those hair bands from my babysitters’ tastes and the concert t-shirts they wore. And Def Leppard was one of those bands. I wore my Pyromania cassette out in my boom box, listened to it morning and night. But now that I’m older, morning didn’t cut it. “Magic” is better for a 7:30 a.m. drive, a bit lighter, a better groove, and, I’ll deny this if you repeat it, but I caught myself singing along.
See, this is what happens when you only have one cup of coffee in the morning. Then again, maybe the hotel spiked my yogurt.
