BATTLE OF THE BREAKFAST BANDS . WHERE THERE ARE NO RULES . ONLY TWO BANDS. AND BREAKFAST.
Time: Approx 8:14 a.m.
Location: My kitchen, Midwest, USA, with my wife and our two kids.
Anything out of ordinary: Otherwise than my two kids having a morning meltdown, nothing out of the ordinary.
What I Ate: Pancakes. Strawberries. Grapefruit. And three cups of black coffee.
Facing Off: Har Mar Superstar’s “DUI” vs. Prince’s “Screwdriver”
Band Selection Rationale: I watched Prince recently rip it up on TV and thought I found him a formidable competitor in one Har Mar Superstar.
Winner: Interesting . . . but Battle 3 goes to . . . Har Mar.
Why: As we are learning, Battle of the Breakfast Bands is all about song choice. And this time, as a father, I accidentally chose the two most inappropriate songs for children.
Lyrically, “DUI” and “Screwdriver” are both very sexually charged songs – completely unfitting for the ears of small kids.
Har Mar’s “DUI” is all about a drunk booty call and “Screwdriver” is pretty self-explanatory – it’s all boilerplate Prince, sexual innuendo and all.
Song choices aside, my two kids were crabby even before the music played. They didn’t want to dance. They didn’t want to finish their breakfast. There was lots of screaming, lots of crying, lots of not sitting in chairs. All the while, my wife was saying turn the music off.
But I stood firm and strong and played the two songs anyway . . . then I powered down.
As for the winner, both songs rock, but “Screwdriver” is not for breakfast. It’s for another time of day – when the lights are low and wives are happy with their husbands.
“DUI” is a breakfast song, an adult breakfast song with plenty of sway. It’s sunny, fun, and pancake friendly . . . a great breakfast guest . . . when your kids are smiling . . . and away.
