BATTLE OF THE BREAKFAST BANDS – WHERE THERE ARE NO RULES. ONLY TWO BANDS. AND BREAKFAST.
Time: 8:15 a.m.
Location: My kitchen, Midwest, USA
Anything out of the ordinary?: My wife’s been sick over the past few days and skipping the coffee which means I’ve been drinking the entire pot.
What I ate: Wheat toast w/ butter, strawberries, an apple, 3 cups black coffee.
Facing Off: The Kinks’ “Powerman” vs. David Bowie’s “Queen Bitch”
Band Selection Rationale
Wes Anderson‘s new feature “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is in limited release now. I’m a WA nut! A complete fool for his films.
Why? For the same reasons any other fan boy would admit.
The worlds Anderson creates, the characters he molds, and for my money, some of the greatest movie soundtracks of all time.
Anderson’s attention to the details are flawless and the music in his stories are not just background but are carefully curated and are sort of a character in their own right.
Like the usual suspects in his ensemble casts — Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, et al — he also has his go-to artists of Bowie, Velvet Underground and The Stones. Anderson’s taste (his original collaborations w/ Mark Mothersbaugh notwithstanding) teeters someplace between the indie rock of 90’s college radio and a “Nuggets” compilation.
So, all that said, I’m amped for the new film and got me thinking of song selections. I was envisioning the final scene and credits from “Darjeeling Limited” and could hear Powerman playing in my head.
And thus a Wes Anderson-inspired Battle of the Breakfast Bands was born.
The Kinks
David Bowie
Winner: The Kinks, “Powerman.”
Why: It was a very tough decision here, like choosing which one of your children you love more.
Maybe the fix was in from the start and I was biased in my own head, but listened to “Powerman” first. I was grooving so hard I spilled my third cup of coffee.
I feel like this song just prepared me for the day to take it on full force.
Bowie, I love you buddy, and your song, which was sung by Brazil’s Seu Jorge to close out “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.”
If it’s any consolation Ziggy, my wife thinks you won.
