Describing their sound as “a little bit of old and familiar mixed with alien, fantasy and the unexpected,” Lizzie and the Makers say that famed director David Lynch and his legendary Twin Peaks TV show influenced their latest album Dear Onda Wahl.
That’s all well and good, but what we heard from the album — including its first two singles “Mermaid” and “Lover by Proxy” — was an extraordinarily good time.
David Lynch, Twin Peaks, alien, fantasy, the unexpected?
We kinda get it. But this is really straight-up blues rock tinged with 70s growl and late night guitar licks.
Forget cherry pie and a cup of coffee, Special Agent Cooper, you’ll want some bourbon and a pack of smokes for this one.
The exceptional Dear Onda Wahl dropped earlier this month.

1. What is your earliest musical memory?
My earliest memory is of taking music theory classes and piano lessons at age 4! I loved those classes so much.

2. What has been your most embarrassing musical moment?
In college, I sang “Eternal Flame” in an a cappella group. My voice cracked on the final high note in front of hundreds of people! It took me a couple of years to get my confidence back in my soprano range.

3. What do you like and dislike about touring?
I love exploring new towns and cities with my band – we get to bond a lot and it makes us better on stage! We are a tight crew. Conversely, I dislike being away from home for too long. I’m a native New Yorker through and through and definitely get homesick after a couple of weeks!

4. What is your favorite record store, anywhere in the world?
Record Shop in Red Hook, Brooklyn! The owner, Bene, is a really cool dude and always has an amazingly eclectic and curated selection. Sometimes he’ll sing to you too.

5. Other than your own music, what is your favorite song or album of all-time? Why?
Ooohh… probably “I’ve Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You” by Aretha Franklin. Not only is the performance incredibly moving and fueled by passionate vocals, but also the story behind the recording session is legendary.

6. You wake up in a seedy Berlin hotel room with no recollection of the past 96 hours. Who is your first call?
Ha! Oh man. I hope this never happens to me, but if it did I’d probably call my older brother who lives in Paris.
