MY FAVORITE ACTOR, AND WHY

Bryan I don’t have a favorite actor; they all seem like pretty fun people to party with. Although, if I take an inventory, I’d have to say that Leonardo DiCaprio tends to make me feel happy when I watch him. That kid’s got talent!

JarrodSteve McQueen: The guy is the epitome of “cool.”

Patrick: I have lots of favorite actors, but in the last week I’ve been binging on the “Hap and Leonard” mystery series on Netflix, which I can’t recommend enough. Really lame that it was canceled after three seasons. Anyway, I think Michael K. Williams, who plays Leonard, is terrific. He was also my favorite character, Omar, in The Wire.

MY FAVORITE BOOK, AND WHY

Bryan: Most recent favorite book is The Sellout by Paul Beatty. That kid’s got talent!

Jarrod: Can’t narrow it down to one single book, but I particularly enjoy anything written by John Grisham. I love his style of storytelling—it’s very captivating and somehow seems familiar to me.

My: My favorite book (at this moment) is The Pillars of the Earth.

Patrick: Lately it’s Please Kill Me by Legs McNeil—composed of dozens of interviews about the 1970s New York punk scene. I love reading about that period of music when bands were insanely creative and resourceful (and self-destructive) in a city that was falling apart.

MY FAVORITE RECIPE (FOOD or DRINK/COCKTAIL), AND WHY

Bryan: I make a shrimp linguini that my wife really loves. I think it’s my favorite because of the joy it brings her. That kid’s got talent!

Jarrod: A pot of homemade tomato sauce made from ingredients straight from the garden (my grandma Nonni’s recipe). Pour that over a plate of homemade pasta and fill your glass with red wine. In my opinion, there is nothing better than a house filled with the aroma of pasta sauce, garlic, basil, and wine.

HOW TO NOT EAT PASTA EVERY DAY DURING QUARANTINE

Bryan: Don’t cook it.

Jarrod: Not possible…nor recommended.

***

MY FAVORITE EXERCISE, AND WHY

Bryan: Swimming. First, I do it early in the morning so it’s a great way to start the day. Second, Speedos. When I step out of the locker room I feel like Patrick Starfish, but when I step out of the pool I feel like Sting, in Dune. I like the emotional swing. It’s like living a T Rex song.

Jarrod: I love running—especially at night. It really clears the head and allows me to immerse myself in my latest playlist.

MY FAVORITE HEALTH TIP

Bryan: For me it’s creative expression. The form I like most is music, then writing. I have a hard time not experiencing anger when I look at the world. But, the energy I get from anger I can use to make stuff.

Jarrod: Red wine—it feeds the blood! Great for the heart (so they say). Don’t know if it’s truly healthy—but I’m doing my best to test the theory.

HOW DO I PLAN TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE REVITALIZATION OF ECONOMY

Bryan: Well, I really want to buy a new saxophone. Actually two. I’m looking for Mark VI tenor and Yanagisawa B901 bari. I’d like to spur the used sax market. Don’t tell my wife, ‘cause that’ll run us about $7K and $6K respectfully. So probably not going to happen. More likely I’ll be helping to revitalize the local venue scene. I want to spend my money on helping them bounce back. They’re nice folks.

Jarrod: I’m looking forward to getting back out into the local community. Dining out, shopping, happy hours, more live music, art shows, exploring the outdoors—you name it. I think this has been a wake-up call that we all need to get busy living and experiencing all that our fellow humans and the world have to offer! As we’ve seen recently, things can change really damn quickly and not always for the best.

Patrick: Travel! And locally, I plan to see tons of bands, drink heavily, and tip the bartenders well!

HOW TO STAY FIT INDOORS

Patrick: I use elastic resistance bands that can be lethal when not attached properly to the doorframe. I also have a beat-to-hell NordicTrack cross-country machine from the 1980s, which actually works really well!

MY FAVORITE DIRECTOR, AND WHY

Patrick: Of all time? Hitchcock—I never get tired of his movies. The storytelling, the actors, the dialogue, the music, and just the weird/unique way they look.

My: Tim Burton is probably my favorite director. Not all of his movies are great, but I love how he carries his own dark-side-of-Disney vision through everything he touches (from Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure to Sweeney Todd). Bonus: many of them feature Danny Elfman’s music.

MY FAVORITE MOVIE, AND WHY

Patrick: If I narrowed it down to my favorite of the dozen or so I’ve watched while self-isolating, it’s probably 1917. Completely intense from start to finish, and I’ve never seen camera work or sets quite like that.

My: Raiders of the Lost Ark. It scared the shit out of me when I was little. I think we all know why this movie is amazing.

MY FAVORITE MUSIC PLAYLIST, AND WHY

My: I love the Coconut Radio playlists that Jason Schwartzman posts. I think he has very similar music taste to me. Lots of new indie artists that don’t get proper attention.

MY FAVORITE HEALTH TIP

Patrick: Stay off the goddamn newsfeeds right before bed.

***

MY FAVORITE YOUTUBE CLIP, AND WHY

Patrick: Freddy Mercury leading Wembley stadium in an acapella “Ey-yo!” exercise at Live Aid. It’s mind-blowing. Watch it for yourself!
