Favorite Things – Suggestions From The Milwaukees – A New Jersey Rock Band

***

We’re from Jersey – and we like our rock n’ roll from the heart.

We like big stadium anthems, we like boozy sing-alongs, and we like songs that saturate our highway drives as we accelerate into the night with our windows down and our glowing cigarette tips being blown to smithereens.

Oh, you do, too?

Then you must have a little Jersey in you.

And if that’s the case, like us, you’ve been crying out for a big-time rock album to wipe away those COVID blues and escape into the arms of Mother Summer.

That album is revealing itself on August 21st. It’s titled The Calling and it’s by The Milwaukees, a vet rock n’ roll quartet from, you got it, New Jersey.

Below, the Milwaukees introduce us to their favorite things — including a blue-and-green swimsuit. You’ve been warned.

BAND: The Milwaukees

POSITION: Bass

HOMETOWN: Currently Jersey City, NJ; Born and raised in Audubon, NJ

1. MY FAVORITE MOVIE:

Rocky. Because everyone should love the underdog, I know I do! And for a kid growing up in the Philadelphia region In the 80s & 90s, this was pretty much the only Philly athlete/team that won!

2. MY FAVORITE BOOK:

A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway. Because it’s romantic and well written yet it doesn’t have that Hollywood ending. It’s more like real life, although it can be filled with happiness, it is sometimes disappointing and sometimes the things we do, like fighting and wars are just pointless. One of my favorite moments is where he crosses Lake Maggiore into Switzerland with his lover on a rowboat to escape the Italian carabinieri.

3. A PLACE I WANT TO VISIT:

I have yet to go to Ireland. I have some friends and family there, and it’s the majority of my own personal heritage. So many things I would like to see and do! Several people I’d like to see!

4. MY FAVORITE OUTFIT:

My favorite outfit is the Mummers outfit worn by Jason Kelce, All-Pro center for the Philadelphia Eagles at the Super Bowl LII parade on Broad Street.

Drummer Austin Faxon - The Milwaukees

NAME: Austin Faxon

AGE (if you want to give it up): 48

BAND: The Milwaukees

POSITION: Drums

HOMETOWN: Moorestown, NJ (Cream Ridge, NJ, nowadays)

1. MY FAVORITE MOVIE:

It’s a tie. Citizen Kane and Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Great stories told by great directors in Orson Welles and Steven Spielberg.  So much of what we have come to take for granted in film making started with Citizen Kane. Raiders of the Lost Ark may be one of the most complete movies ever made, there’s almost never a break or a lull.

2. MY FAVORITE BOOK:

Dune by Frank Herbert.  It may be one of the most original stories ever written.  Herbert’s characters and the universe they inhabit are so detailed and vast. I have never come by anything that comes close to it.

3. A PLACE I WANT TO VISIT:

I’ve always wanted to see Machu Picchu. I am fascinated by the beauty and remoteness of the place.  I find it amazing that an ancient civilization was able to build a stone citadel at almost 8,000 ft.

4. MY FAVORITE OUTFIT:

When I am in my Gritty costume I am living my best life.

1. MY FAVORITE MOVIE:

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Mostly because I was just the right age to have my mind blown by it when it came out. But it has stood the test of time with me after a few dozen viewings. At some point I realized the movie is really Cameron’s story. He is the one that really goes on a journey. He’s the one that confronts a challenge and changes in the end. That fascinates me. And I’m always a sucker for a story about a dude with Daddy issues.

2. MY FAVORITE BOOK:

As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner. I love Faulkner. I love the way each chapter is narrated from a different character’s point of view and that smack in the middle of the book a chapter is narrated by the dead woman at the center of the story from beyond the grave. In a weird way it is VERY similar the Motley Crue bio, The Dirt. That’s another great book with shifting narrators. The only difference is that Nikki dies for a few minutes and he gets to narrate the rest of his chapters with the benefit of life.

3. A PLACE I WANT TO VISIT:

Australia or Hawaii. Both just seem like they have a climate that is as similar to New Jersey as Mars or the surface of the moon. Just really different and I don’t think I can understand it without being there.

4. MY FAVORITE OUTFIT (photo by Victoria Engblom):

I love me a pair of slim fit bootcut jeans. I never got on the skinny jeans train. I’m just going to ride bootcut jeans until they come back around again. A good pair of ankle boots is always good. I like wearing a white belt. And I’ve been experimenting with denim jackets lately.
