You may be living in Punjab, or may be from Himachal or Haryana, but the sheer proximity to the capital of the world’s largest democracy does spruce this idea that you can get away with anything. After all you are living in cities that are right next to New Delhi, where people walk on the power corridors of the world’s second largest population.
Now please don’t think that am indicating murder or money laundering. I am just hinting at the quality of being a sheer North Indian where knowing the who’s of who of the society is an everyday “on your face” gesture and where concocting sugary stories of being the son-in-law of a minister in power or being the cousin of a real estate mogul can make you an overnight sensation at a party fetching you free beer, then who cares to know if you were even invited there at the first place.
In reality, you may not even know your next door neighbour but having some allegiance to a “big shot”, leaves your friends, more often than not, star struck. But, this isn’t criticism, it’s just how we are in the North of India. The vibrant cities of Delhi, Chandigarh, Faridabad and Meeut eat, sleep, drink, walk and talk these customs in everyday life.
But, there is more to us than our fancy cars and high tech gadgets!
India, now a booming economy, gets quoted frequently in world media by other hugely developed economies of United States, China, Russia and Japan for its sheer economic might and a sharp rise in the scale of entrepreneurship.
If one notices, North of India has its own part to play in this new success story. The region of Delhi and that of the Nation Capital Region, a geographical spread enveloping neighbouring cities of Delhi, pronounced locally as NCR, has added boost to industries and entrepreneurship in the country.
Together with Noida and Faridabad, the largest constituent to economic progress assimilating from Northern India is Gurgaon, the economic capital of the state of Haryana.
Known for being a busy cosmopolis, Gurgaon is home to some of the largest multinationals of the world who have made this complex and dynamic city their homeground in India.
Just like Asia is regarded as the hotbed of Infrastructure growth and development, Gurgaon is being hailed as a booming metropolis, home to many a multinational, ever so keen to find their footing in India and climb the growth charts pointing north! And this has been the large caption in its economic progress for over a decade and a half.
But you would be mistaken to construe that this is what the city of Gurgaon, in Delhi NCR is all about. Yes you would see as many swanky BMWs, Mercedes and Audis on the roads as the sky-reaching buildings.
There would be as many traffic lights and one way getaways as there are roadside dhabas, i.e., an Indian language phrase for an Indian road side eatery.
The hustle and bustle of Gurgaon with its corporate work force, entrepreneurs, school kids, on-the-go policemen, women out on a shopping spree- all come to indicate a sense of regular chaos that you would find in a busy city, one that is always on the move.
An eclectic bunch of the zealous youth along with the poise of the elderly, seem to fit perfectly in Gurgaon’s demography, connoting a portrait of peace, prosperity, ambition and drive.
TOMORROW: PART 3, GURGAON, THEN AND NOW!
