Six Crucial Questions for Hush Machine, AKA Sam Boatright

***

Sam Boatright is a stud who doesn’t know it yet.

While we like his debut song “Batter Up” a lot, the 21-year-old — who plays as Hush Machine — really gets us when he plays stripped-down rock n’ roll songs.

Our favorites from Hush Machine’s self-titled new album include “Try Forever,” So We Can Dance,” and “Sorry.”

Seriously, give a listen to “Try Forever” (embed below), and then you’ll understand why we’re expecting big things from the Kansas native — and a couple of chipped teeth, as well.

Without further ado…

1. What is your earliest musical memory?

My grandma gave me what was probably a Time Life compilation of mid to late-50s and early-60s rock and roll, stuff like “Wooly Bully” and the Newbeats, super straightforward infectious pop.

2. What has been your most embarrassing musical moment?

I’m surprised I haven’t chipped my teeth on a mic yet. My depth perception must be off because I always come up too strong and fast on the mic after I step away for a second.

3. What do you like and dislike about touring?

Seeing the US and being able to meet great people in other towns is what it’s all about! Playing great shows to new people is exhilarating. Downside is you become a sweaty, stinky musician, but that’s what I usually am anyway!

4. What is your favorite record store, anywhere in the world?

I am biased because I work at Love Garden Sounds in Lawrence, KS, but I am keenly aware of how spoiled the town of Lawrence is with a record store of that caliber!

***

5. Other than your own music, what is your favorite song or album of all-time? Why?

Eddy Grant “Electric Avenue.” No explanation needed.

6. You wake up in a seedy Berlin hotel room with no recollection of the past 96 hours. Who is your first call?

The number I tattooed inside of my lip from the night before.
