Wine of the Week:
Dominio del Plata Crios Torrontés

Wine of the Week: Dominio del Plata Crios Torrontés

Maker: Dominio del Plata
Year: 2012
Region: Mendoza, Argentina

Torrontés is the white wine of Argentina, and it’s a gorgeous white wine alternative to the standards.  The Torrontés grape varies in style, depending upon the region of Argentina in which it is grown and the producer, but it is generally an aromatic .  Dominio del Plata’s owner is Susana Balbo – otherwise known as the “Queen of Torrontés”.  This is a name she earned during her first job as a winemaker where she was in charge of further developing the Torrontés grape, the result of which was her creating a style of Torrontés wine with a floral nose and a refreshing citrus taste.  And she continues to be credited to this day with being the creator of this distinctive style that people have come to love internationally.

This is an aromatic wine with white flowers, hints of peach pit and pear, and orange blossom citrus, coupled with fantastic structure and acidity.  It is delicate and complex, lifted and bright.  It also goes well with food almost as well as it does on it’s own – courtesy of Balbo, a powerhouse rock star of the wine world.

Oh – and the wine is still super affordable, making this one of the best value wines on the market.   The other white grape – it’s what’s for Spring.
